SS Great Britain Trust commissioned Greenhouse to produce an interactive scheme for the Superhero Engineers; a dynamic family trail event. The project brought engineering pioneers to life as “superheroes,” engaging younger audiences through storytelling, character-led design, and hands-on discovery—while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainable production.
Inspire families and young visitors to explore engineering through play and storytelling
Develop bold, character-driven interpretation featuring figures such as Brunel and Tesla
Deliver a low-impact, environmentally responsible suite of printed and physical materials
The creative concept reimagined iconic engineers as superhero-style characters, each with their own “powers,” personality traits and our production focused on sustainably translating the beautifully illustrated creative into durable, high-quality pieces suitable for a very unique environment – on board the SS Great Britain! Graphic assets were prepared for print with careful attention to colour consistency, legibility, and material performance, ensuring the artwork reproduced accurately across all formats for a vibrant, graphic-led visitor experience.
Interactive stations were designed to encourage participation—inviting children to solve challenges, and become their very own super heroes. The narrative connected directly to the heritage of the SS Great Britain, creating a cohesive on-site experience.
Sustainability was integrated throughout the process, ensuring that the bold visual style did not come at the expense of environmental responsibility.
Recycled and FSC-certified substrates
Durable, 100% recyclable display boards
Lightweight, modular components
The exhibition and trail successfully captured the imagination of young visitors, with strong engagement across all age groups. The superhero theme made complex engineering concepts accessible and fun, while the sustainable approach ensured the project aligned with the Trust’s environmental goals.
The Superhero Engineers project demonstrates how playful, high-impact design can coexist with sustainable principles. By combining imaginative storytelling with responsible material choices, the SS Great Britain delivered an engaging, educational experience that supports both heritage interpretation and environmental awareness and gained some hugely positive feedback.
